Technology is an integral and vital part of our everyday lives. But what about in the lives of children? A new study finds that adults give their children access to technology at a younger and younger age.
Nearly 1 in 4 (24%) parents or caretakers have let kids play with tech when they’re 1 or younger, and 74% have exposed their children to technology by the time they turn 5.
Despite the young age, 59% of parents are concerned with their kid’s screen use. Almost 70% add their kid’s screen use has increased since 2020, and more than 1 in 10 believe screen time will increase even more over the next year. But kids aren’t the only ones who have been staring at screens more. Nearly 3 out of 5 (59%) adults recognize that their own screen time has increased since 2020, and 62% say their tech use influences their children (mostly in a negative way).
Why are children looking at screens? Almost half (56%) of adults surveyed say they’ve used technology to distract or quiet their kids in situations like car rides and restaurants.
Eye health is important, but 29% admit they do not take their kids to the eye doctor regularly. More than 1 in 10 believe their kid’s vision has gotten worse since 2020, and 17% have bought blue light glasses for their children.
Nearly half (49%) of parents believe their kids are addicted to technology, and 54% admit they themselves are addicted to looking at screens. Only 22% estimate their kids spend 2 hours or less looking at screens, and 78% believe their child stares at a screen for 3 hours or longer daily. The majority of parents (65%) agree: they want their kids looking at screens for only 2 hours or less every day.
