Book Nook: Turmali and the Light Savers

Captivating its young readers as they work their way through this currently 14-strong collection of stories, Turmali and the Light Savers is a series with a difference.

The brainchild of Mike Gaunt, this author and literary pioneer sets the scene in the first Turmali instalment - How it All Began – and then hands over the writing reins to a group of enthusiastic, but up until now unpublished, writers. Responsible for the next 13 instalments, each new author pens a book centring on one of the 12 earth children, and one about a very special robot, and their role in helping the people of Turmali restore normality and the tourmaline gemstones to their rightful home.

As the series unfolds, each individual book introduces a child from a different country. Using Mike Gaunt’s template, readers are treated to five stories per book, all of which culminate in the thirteen (including Ike the robot) meeting up and learning how important it is to work as a team and support the people of Turmali.

An altruistic and innovative method of storytelling, Mike Gaunt’s series not only offers its young readers some fantastic adventures, but an opportunity to learn more about the lives, cultures, family dynamics and religions of its protagonists.

With 14 books already published, fans of this series will be delighted to learn that a further 14 are in the publishing pipeline.  Striking gold with the creativity, content and construction of this series, the word count of the whole compendium is a similar tally to that of the complete Harry Potter works.  Here’s hoping Turmali and The Light Savers goes on to achieve similar literary world domination.

About the series:

Turmali is a mystical land set high in the sky where nobody can see it. It is made up of 7 lands (that have similarities to our continents.) The lands are connected by ‘Rainbow Bridges’ powered by Tourmaline Gemstones. The people of Turmali can travel freely between the lands by crossing the Rainbow Bridges.

One day their perfect world is shattered when it is invaded by aliens from a distant galaxy, the invaders become known as ‘The Light Killers’ as they set about stealing and hiding away all the Tourmaline gemstones. The consequence is that the ‘Rainbow Bridges’ fade away and the 7 lands of Turmali are left isolated and dark.

Some of the elders of Turmali get together and decide to seek the help of 12 young children from earth, who all have connections to Tourmaline gemstones. The series of stories focuses on each of the 12 children and how they are transported to Turmali where they have many adventures as they set about help the Turmali people to fight off the alien invaders.

Pioneer of the series, and author of the first book, Mike Gaunt says:

“I created the series and hired a group of enthusiastic writers (all unpublished) to research the characters and write the connected adventure stories to my guidelines.

“All the books are the IP of my company, Turmali Publishing Limited and I came up with the idea for the series from my days working as a senior executive for a major multinational corporation.

“I travelled the world extensively promoting educational software and met with many teachers, children, and educationalists. Wherever in the world I was when meeting school children, I was always asked the same question. ‘What do children do in your country?’

“I hope this series of stories will answer that question for children anywhere. This series has taken around six years to put together and the final series will be 28 books – the remaining 14 books will be published over the next 18 months. All the stories are completed and are awaiting the remaining illustrations to be finished.”
