Healthy Habits: Body Image Survey

Burnout, fatigue, and self-criticism when it comes to physical appearance are rampant in today’s society. But are the biggest sources of Americans’ mental health struggles internal or external?

New research reveals the top causes of unhealthy body image amongst Americans in 2022. While some point to self-esteem and social media as the culprit, 23% say their parents or parents contributed to their current unhealthy body image.

  • 35% of Americans self-report “negative” body image
  • 1 in 5 believe they have had an undiagnosed eating disorder
  • 44% say the top cause of unhealthy body image stems from societal or cultural norms

As many Americans start to notice red flags in the negative impacts social media creates from adolescence to adulthood, it’s not surprising the research revealed 41% named social media as a contributor factor to their unhealthy body image.

Within Health Chief Clinical Officer, Rebecca Brumm, gives expert advice on this issue:

“Often the most susceptible areas for negativity and helplessness can surround how one feels about themself and the biggest target for this negativity is frequently aimed at our bodies. It's easy to think that the solution to our problems is on the other side of an "improvement" to our body. Yet, it is actually the opposite. Consuming ourselves with unhealthy thoughts and comparisons about our bodies consumes precious energy and snags us in a self-deprecating loop. Instead, recognize the urge to criticize yourself as an opportunity to become thoughtful about what changes might actually meet your needs.”
