Songs & Daughters starlet Madison Kozak evaluates words that lose their meaning with time and repetition, emphasis on worn-out apologies, with “What Does Sorry Mean” available everywhere now.
Penned by Kozak with Andy Skib and Thomas Finchum, and produced by Chris LaCorte, “What Does Sorry Mean” catches Kozak delivering one of her finest vocal performances to date. The soulful ache in her voice only underscores the sorrow in her lyrics, topped with a timeless, traditional arrangement reminiscent of the classic country influences she loves so much.
“We had no clever title,” Kozak says of the “What Does Sorry Mean” writing session. “No flashy melody. It was just a heartfelt conversation about how this word, 'sorry,' can hurt so much, as well as the overuse of it. And how some people, their actions don't necessarily line up with their words. That can hurt more than anything else.”
Premiering exclusively with American Songwriter, the official music video for “What Does Sorry Mean” is “a personal take on the stream of conscious lyricism found in the song itself” (American Songwriter), directed by Justin Clough and shot just outside of Nashville. Read the full exclusive here, where the outlet applauds how “Kozak is unafraid to trust her gut and act on her natural instincts.”
On August 27, Kozak returned to the Grand Ole Opry stage for a bittersweet celebration of recent single release “Loud House,” a song that Holler calls "a full circle moment that looks back on growing up and the heartache of leaving home to chase that dream you want so badly.” Read why her second time in the Circle was a life-reflects-art experience as special as her debut exclusively with PEOPLE here.
As a summer of new music comes to a close with “Sorry,” Kozak hopes to leave listeners connected to the music she's written, chock full of minor chords and major feelings. “This is real,” Kozak says. “This is who I am. And I think this is what I do best. And that's what I want to show people.”
ABOUT MADISON KOZAK
“Sharp, swooning, and all the right kinds of sentimental” (Rolling Stone), blossoming singer/songwriter Madison Kozak mesmerizes listeners with a strong pen and a vulnerable voice. Her breakout debut single, “First Last Name,” not only scored the Belmont alum a publishing deal with Big Loud in 2018, but compelled award-winning songwriter Nicolle Galyon to launch female-driven label Songs & Daughters, and sign Kozak as their flagship artist. In the months following her signings, Kozak graduated with a music business degree, toured the U.S. and Canada with Morgan Evans, Aaron Watson, and Mason Ramsey, and made her Grand Ole Opry debut to a standing ovation. Named to CMT's 2021 Listen Up roster and 2020 Next Women of Country class, the Lindsay, Ontario native was named a country artist to watch by Pandora, Pop Culture, Sounds Like Nashville, and more. Kozak returns with a taste of “a voice that glows and songwriting capability that resonates” (Sounds Like Nashville) on her first new music releases in over two and a half years, “If We Were A Country Song,” “One Girl To Another,” “Loud House,” and “What Does Sorry Mean.”
