Website Spotlight: Build Your Nest

“There’s no one right way to prepare for or create a postpartum plan,” says Kestrel Gates, Founder of Build Your Nest, a company that provides parents and professionals with tools and education promoting rest, support, and care during the postpartum time. “Like births, each postpartum experience is different. The most important thing is that mothers and families do what is best for them.”

Having had two very different postpartum experiences when her children were born, Gates saw a huge need for a cultural shift. ”Sometimes the biggest blocks to having rest, support, and care are the ways our culture affects our thinking. We may feel pressure to prove ourselves as the mythological “good mothers”. Or we may be thinking that because mothering is “natural” it must be easy. I wanted to give parents a simple tool that would empower them to work with the resources available to have better postpartum experiences. The workbook grew out of that need.”

Originally published in 2016, Build Your Nest: a postpartum planning workbook is an indispensable, easy-to-use planning workbook that includes key information to help parents create a successful, personalized postpartum plan. Since its original English edition, Build Your Nest: a postpartum planning workbook has been translated into seven languages, with parents and professionals calling it “life-changing”, “a must-have”, and “the perfect guide for parents.”

The community that is forming around Build Your Nest — doulas, midwives, psychologists, nurses, journalists, and social workers — share a common vision of improving maternal health in their communities. “We believe postpartum recovery is a basic human right and that the health of mothers and birthing people, is foundational to healthy societies. We know that regardless of culture or health care system, mothers everywhere are struggling. And we know that postpartum planning and support can help,” explains Gates.
