Since the pandemic, we have seen many books that have put a greater emphasis on spirituality. The publishing industry has seen explosive growth in Christian fiction. People seem to be looking for a book with a spiritual message. I had a chance to interview Sandra Smith, a new critically acclaimed author who has seen her book Deep Waters receive critical acclaim as this interest in Christian fiction has grown.
Tell us about your book?
Deep Waters Within is a takeoff from Jonah in the Bible. It is about a man in his thirties who is close to his father except in faith. They fight over their differences and he moves from Chatham Mass. to Half Moon Bay CA. Resisting calling his parents due to his own feelings of guilt for leaving, he is unaware of his father's health issues. His father developed cancer. Even though he develops close friendships and a love interest, he still struggles internally and spiritually. Due to those struggles that caused nightmares and arguing with his current girlfriend, he finally calls and moves back to Chatham. The struggle comes to a head when his father dies. In the end he stops resisting the Lord and finds peace. It is too bad that it came at a high price, the loss of precious time with his father
What led you to write it?
It was inspired by the Lord and the words flowed from within as I wrote it, like many of my other books.
What do you hope readers will learn from it and walk away with?
To not be so rigid and prideful and be open to the fact that you may have wrong perceptions on certain issues. Until you know the facts and are open to seeking the truth about differences and things you do not understand or think you do not want, you allow what could be wrong perceptions to cloud your thinking and cause adverse results. These are brought on from the consequences of your actions due to those perceptions.
What was the most difficult part in writing the book?
The most difficult part of writing this and any book is finding time to do it. I also have a full-time job, besides doing speaking events, hosting a podcast with my husband called You Got This! and keeping up with our own blog and inspirational moments on You Tube.
Do you plan on writing more books?
Yes, in fact Deep Waters Within is one of 30. My thirtieth book, due to be released soon, is called The Train Ride.
