I recently had a chance to review an intriguing book, The Dressmakers of Prospect Heights. The book, set in 1924, follows a dressmaker who set up shop with her orphaned ward, and a young woman down the street who longs to start a family of her own.
When Bea, the dressmaker, befriends Catherine, her ward Alice becomes jealous of their growing relationship. Soon secrets come out about who Bea is and her less-than-ideal past.
It's a very well-written book. There were definitely moments of frustration as a reader when the characters would have made very different decisions if they had only known the whole story. The ending is satisfying, in a way that reaffirms the humanity and imperfectness of everyone involved, while managing to strengthen relationships and forge new bonds.
