Book Nook: Dead Man Standing

For upcoming stories and book reviews, and interviews, please consider author Voll Greene of novels “It’s Not a Game” and “Dead Man Standing.” “It’s Not a Game” stems from personal issues after being born into a family with many issues due to his darker skin. Constantly beaten by his family who lied whenever he would attempt to speak up, his mother remarried, a physically abusive husband. When Voll turned thirteen, he was shot by his stepfather because he intervened when his stepfather almost beat his mother to death and his siblings were all placed in foster care. “Dead Man Standing'' gives a glimpse of how hard it is for an innocent man to prove his innocence after a cop found out that his wife was having a love affair and he attempted to kill an innocent man.

For many years, Voll watched families struggle to operate and come together in harmony. He has also experienced police brutality and has a moral obligation to embark on this journey to heal families for the betterment of their local communities and society as a whole.

Voll says, “My book shows how families may make mistakes, but they work to correct them the best way possible. Most importantly, this book unveils love and respect for my mother and big brother. I wrote this book before they passed away, but they never had the chance to read it. I thought I hated my family, but I realized that I had to help them grow too. Now we have all grown past ignorance.”

You can learn more in this interview.

What are some ways that families can break the cycle of violence? Learning to listen and be patient with one another.
What are some ways that police brutality affects a community? It creates distrust for the victims and the aggressors.
What are some ways to stop police brutality and create safer communities? Hold them accountable and take away the federal protection.  We also should be holding their police union accountable.
