Book Nook: Post-Traumatic Thriving

Dr. Randall Bell is a trauma expert and socio-economist who considers unresolved trauma the number one problem facing humanity. He explains the science and the research behind proven healing strategies in his new book, Post-Traumatic Thriving, in which he also shares true stories about real people (including some familiar names) who were able to thrive following a traumatic event.

I had a chance to review a copy of the book, and found it inspiring and well-written. What I really thought was good about this book was the sheer variety of stories. It included medical issues, drug use, family loss, crime, failed Olympic ambitions, and more. By incorporating all of these varied experiences, the book validated the trauma that can happen from a whole range of events - even if they aren't events we've experienced, or might think would cause trauma.

I've had a car accident - a major car accident that involved extended recovery and after effects for myself and my kids. Although it doesn't compare in some ways to the struggles others have, it was a very real struggle for our family. Having tools for dealing with trauma and grief - whatever the cause - is extremely beneficial, and this book is a great way to provide those tools.

“The science is so good in terms of the brain neurology and understanding what we go through when we go through trauma and the five stages of grief,” Dr. Bell said. “But the science is also spectacular when it comes to the techniques that get us from just surviving to thriving.”

I loved that idea - to not just survive the trauma, but to come through it stronger than before, and really thrive.
