Book Nook - The Island of the Four Ps: A Modern Fable About Preparing for Your Future

Ed Hajim, author of On the Road Less Traveledhas a new book I recently got to review - The Island of the Four PsA Modern Fable About Preparing for Your Future. The book’s purpose is to help its readers navigate troubled waters, acknowledge change, handle instability and cope with uncertainty. Ed shares a story stemming from his Four Ps: Partners, Principles, Passions, and Plans.

Ed's fable is written in a way that can adapt to pretty much everyone. No matter where you are in life, knowing your principles, having passions, finding partners, and creating a plan will help you move forward. Writing the book in fable form makes it seem less formal and more conversational.

Ed’s Four Ps have become his inner voice - his gauge to creating a life that started as an abandoned little boy, tossed between orphanages and foster homes to breaking that cycle with education and time in the Navy using his ongoing discipline and self-determination to become a tremendous success on Wall Street, married for some 57-years, with three grown children and eight grandchildren – and Ed Hajim has created a huge legacy including devoting resources to support students to become scholars – as he believes education is everything.

Today, at his own alma mater, the University of Rochester, a course on Life: Design Your Future is being created surrounding Ed’s approach and books.

Ed says, his Four Ps will guide you – as they always have him -no matter the adversity, disappointment, the unexpected – they will still ground you and help you make choices to answer the question he constantly asks, what’s next?

Ed Hajim is the author of the critically acclaimed memoir, On The Road Less Traveled. The son of a Syrian immigrant, he is a seasoned Wall Street executive with more than 50 years of investment experience. He has held senior management positions with the Capital Group, E.F. Hutton, and Lehman Brothers before becoming chairman and CEO of Furman Selz. Hajim has been the co-chairman of ING Barings, Americas Region; chairman and CEO of ING Aeltus Group and ING Furman Selz Asset Management; and chairman and CEO of MLH Capital. He is now chairman of High Vista, a Boston-based money management company. In 2008, after 20 years as a trustee of the University of Rochester, Hajim began an eight-year tenure as chairman of the university’s board. Upon assuming that office he gave the school $30 million—the largest single donation in its history—to support scholarships and endow the Edmund A. Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Through the Hajim Family Foundation, he has made generous donations to organizations that promote education, health care, arts, culture, and conservation. In 2015, he received the Horatio Alger Award, given to Americans who exemplify the values of initiative, leadership, and commitment to excellence and who have succeeded despite personal adversities. Married for 57 years, Ed and his wife Barbara have three children and eight grandchildren.
