Capturing the imagination of its readers (aged eight to twelve) from the get-go, Oliver Wood’s The Mission: The Duke of Darkness provides an outstanding introduction to his planned seven strong The Mission series.
With the young Alfie Andrews finding himself responsible for pretty much saving the world, and the author delivering everything required from a full-blown action adventure (hero, quest, dangerous environment and villain) young readers will revel in this adventure’s constant hum of suspense and its protagonist’s derring-do.
Parents or those reading the story aloud will also appreciate how the author subtly weaves in the importance of modesty, athleticism, courage, empathy and resilience (MACER), by making these personality traits the code name acronym for Alfie’s first secret mission.
With an ending that positions Alfie perfectly for future secret missions with The Organisation, Oliver Wood’s The Mission Series shows all the potential to enthral in a similar manner as Anthony Horowitz’s career changing Alex Rider series continues to captivate the slightly older.
