To celebrate the launch of MONOPOLY GO!, a reimagined version of the classic board game, MONOPOLY, here is a little MONOPOLY trivia.
- The first version of the Monopoly board game was created by a woman. Her name was Lizzie Maggie, an artist, writer, feminist and inventor. Her game was called “Landlord’s Game.”
- Parker Brothers turned down Charles Darrow, the inventor of Monopoly as we know it today, when he tried to sell it due to 52 fundamental errors including how long it took to play and the complex rules. MONOPOLY GO! is not as complex but it’s super fun especially when you use your wrecking ball to knock down an opponent’s building!
- Did you know when buying property in Monopoly always pay at least half of the original price. Any less than that will allow a player to mortgage the property for a profit. In MONOPOLY GO! invest as much as you can in building Landmarks as that will ensure your money won’t be stolen by a mischievous friend. And don’t forget to collect Shields to protect what you’ve built!
- The game pieces for Monopoly were inspired by the charm bracelet worn by Charles Darrow’s niece. The original pieces were a top hat, thimble, iron, shoe, battleship and cannon. In MONOPOLY GO! there are lots of opportunities to collect a full “bracelet” of Tokens from full color versions to classic pewter.
- The most expensive Monopoly set is worth $2 million. It’s an 18-karat gold game with real jewels and diamonds created by a jeweler named Sidney Mobell in 1998. MONOPOLY GO! is not expensive, it’s free to play!
“MONOPOLY GO!” for iOS and Android is currently the #1 mobile game in the world. The free to play mobile game blends classic MONOPOLY game play with entirely new experiences and imaginative worlds to explore. It’s like jumping inside a Monopoly board game!
