The Road to Splitsville - Evaluating Your Marriage

While the deep belief that both attorney Stephens and Dr. Ron Raymond have is that if you feel there is a chance that your marriage can be saved, you should do all you can to do so, and that seeking the help of a psychologically-oriented counselor may be an essential step.  However, we must keep in mind that over 50 percent of marriages in this country end up in divorce.  Our efforts are to help those who believe that a divorce is what they need to follow to fight through the turmoil that is inherent in a marriage dissolution.  Trust and mutual respect are basic to the foundation of every human relationship and are essential in a successful marital relationship.  Of course, some dissenting issues are part of any marriage and will always arise between two people.

Our approach to help people assess their present marital relationship is that there are four critical components to consider when evaluating whether the marriage can be saved.  These four key factors are:

  1. The degree of commitment you have to the relationship,

  2. The level of seriousness you regard the trouble that has arisen between you

  3. The degree to which the trust and respect have been compromised by what has occurred in the marriage.

  4. The amount of pain the relationship is causing.

A divorce is a process and not just a jumping from being in a relationship to being out of it.  Our efforts are to help people see it and go though it as a multi-step process.

When considering the children in a divorce situation it is essential for both parents to approach all aspects of the divorce with the full acknowledgement that your children did not destroy your marriage.   They did not ask to have parents who discovered their relationship did not work out.   Emphasize on your path to Splitsville that your children are not easily fooled and that they will not be persuade by what you Say, but by your actions and their observations of your behavior.
