Why was This Rested Nest created?
It’s actually a funny story! After the birth of my fifth child, I was awake during a 3 AM nursing session and came across an advertisement for a sleep consultant training program. I didn’t even know that sleep consultants existed (at the time they were not nearly as popular as they are now!) and in an exhausted delirium I decided to sign up. Why? I couldn’t even tell you! Some parents wake up and realized they ordered $300 worth of home décor on Amazon in the middle of the night, but I woke up with a commitment to a new career!
I quickly became obsessed with the science and complexities of sleep, and recognized the potential for helping families with one of the most difficult parts of early parenthood. I knew that through my experiences as a mom of six, a foster and adoptive mom, a teenage mom, a former single mom, and so many other types of “mom,” I could help families in a really unique way. I now use my credentials as a Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant, a Certified Breastfeeding Specialist, as well as my previous experience working in psychiatric healthcare and almost 15 years of parenting to support parents and children with sleep using sustainable and realistic methods.
Why is it so important for families with babies to get support with sleep issues?
Sleep deprivation affects both babies and parents. For babies, lack of sleep can lead to excessive fussiness and in extreme cases can negatively impact their development. For parents, lack of sleep affects the way they are able to care for our children, can contribute to postpartum mood disorders, and has negative physical side effects. In fact, driving while sleep deprived is comparable to driving while drunk! Parenthood should be enjoyed, and it can be really difficult to do when everybody is perpetually tired. Supporting your child’s sleep without using harsh cry-it-out methods can improve your relationship and bond with your child as well as lead to feelings of success as a parent. I have seen parents transform the way they approach their entire child-rearing journey just by learning how to effectively manage their child’s sleep.
How is a membership in a site like this more beneficial than other resources?
Purchasing a PDF guide or sleep course is a great way to learn about sleep, and there will always be a place for these one-and-done resources, but this membership addresses the bigger issue of change. With twice monthly live group calls, parents can ask real time questions that address the issues they are currently experiencing. Additionally, with a digital resource, there are no experts on the other side of the screen asking questions that are applicable to your specific situation. Sleep is very individualized and what works for one child may not work for another. Differences in family dynamics, child temperaments, and cultural preferences all play an important role in creating a plan for sleep that is sustainable and beneficial for the individual child. Also, sometimes it takes an outside set of eyes and ears to pinpoint a missing piece that parents are unable to identify themselves! The most beneficial aspect of a membership like this though, is the long-term support. A newborn baby will not experience the same sleep struggles as a 2-year-old, and an ongoing membership allows parents to take the guesswork out of the ever-changing nature of sleep and get a direct answer from an expert any time they need help.
Why is it important for families to know that sleep patterns are constantly changing with little ones?
One of the foundational principles of my sleep approach is to help parents set realistic expectations. I have found time and time again that when parents believe their child should be sleeping perfectly through the night all the time, they experience feelings of frustration, guilt, and failure. I want parents to expect that sleep patterns will change on a regular basis during the first few years, so that when disruptions arise, they are not caught off guard. This mindset also allows parents to gather the tools to support these sleep changes before they happen, so they are not left trying to troubleshoot the issue in a state of complete sleep deprivation!
