Area Attractions: Oku-Noto Triennale (Suzu Japan, Fall 2023)

The Oku-Noto Triennale 2023 returns this year in spectacular fashion, to be hosted Suzu, a true center of deep rooted Japanese culture, tradition and celebrations in an elegantly secluded location ideal for letting a series of curious artworks truly shine. The festival returns every 3 years and this edition will last between 23 September – 12 November 2023.

The celebration is a collaboration of modern art and nature across the visually stunning region whose rugged coastlines, pristine secluded beaches and majestic mountains frame this collection of artworks that are installed in different locations in the cityscape and the countryside. From public halls to old schools, train stations, railway tracks and open spaces,  the works of art are scattered to be discovered.

The festival unites local and international artists whose works are all inspired by the region’s natural beauty and timeless cultural heritage traces. One extraordinary element that enhances the celebration is the enthusiastic involvement of the local community who actively and proudly take part by leading tours, stamping visitor passes, sharing information with visitors and promoting the event with pride. As such, the festival continues to attract new, younger visitors and an entirely new way for travelers to discover the culture and the fascinating natural attractions. The festival showcases the Suzu Theater Museum that was initially created in 2021 through the collaboration of citizens, artists and researchers, and a unique café and restaurant constructed entirely from glass with a stunning view of the Japan Sea.

Suzu is a remote tip at the Noto Peninsula and is often considered a curious spot to host such a festival but its biodiversity and authentically preserved landscapes make it an open canvas and visitors can also enjoy getting acquainted with its local treasures beyond the art scene such as its fishing industry, local embroidery and unique production of salt that blends in ancient rituals that are spectacular to witness.

Organized by the Oku-Noto Triennale Executive Committee, the region is poised to welcome its largest crowd yet with an array of talents to be announced soon.
