Book Nook: Flying Circus Takes to the Skies

Delivering feel-good factor aplenty, Leona Cobham’s Airplane Adventures Series is destined to top the reading lists of all those youngsters who have a passion for aviation and dreams of taking to the skies.

Using her unique childhood experience of being brought up immersed in aviation (the author’s grandfather, Sir Alan Cobham, made many first-time flights, and pioneered air-to-air refueling), this first book of aerial adventures combines education with entertainment as its three stories burst with technical detail and adventure, as well as a gentle focus on overcoming fear and building friendships.

An exceptional series aimed at children aged 7 to 12, Airplane Adventures perfectly meets the reading needs of those youngsters looking for some real-life technical know-how in their reading choices. And with her first book garnering praise from its intended audience and their adult carers, Leona Cobham and her series are most definitely ready for literary take-off.

Synopsis:

Four airplanes fly important missions in which they face challenges, technical and personal. Tom the F-14 Tomcat has a need for speed. Convinced he’s only valued for his ability to break the sound barrier; the fighter jet is determined to win a race to Australia to keep his air show alive. But when his tanks run empty, has he let the team down? Woody, a wooden biplane with low self-esteem, feels the other airplanes are more capable than him. But he has a special skill which enables him to help Tom and save the day.

In the second story, the team must transfer endangered species to the rescue center; but who will transport what? Will Woody appreciate size is not everything? Spif, the Spitfire, has a keen sense of protocol; he is experienced and knowledgeable and would like to be respected as a historical hero. His passenger is oblivious to his eminence. Vul, an Avro-Vulcan, is content in his own skin. He has seen it all and is just happy to have survived. But then an Antonov arrives with a mal-functioning landing-gear and Vul’s past haunts him. He devises a plant to rescue the six-engine giant and get him home.

About the author:

Leona was immersed in the world of aviation from an early age; her grandfather, Sir Alan Cobham, made many first-time flights as well as pioneering the invention of in-flight refueling. Leona inherited this love of flying and travel. Now she draws her young readers into a world of airplanes through tales told by the airplanes themselves about their adventures, thoughts, and feelings.

Believing happy children learn best, Leona infuses her writing with humor, adventure, and a big feel-good factor. Self-development is a key theme. Her airplanes overcome personal as well as technical challenges to succeed in missions close to Leona’s heart, like helping endangered species, putting out forest fires and building friendships.

Leona began research and writing in 1994 for a PhD on forest-based agriculture in Cameroon. She is a born researcher and her website, like her books, is an archive of fascinating facts about flying. She lives in a house in Surrey, UK, with her two sons and two dogs; a scary number of bees live in hives in her garden.
