Caring Causes - MN Alzheimer's Events

During June, the Alzheimer’s Association commemorates Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month (ABAM) encouraging a conversation about Alzheimer’s and other dementia. It is an opportunity to increase awareness of the disease, learn how it affects the brain, provide information about risk reduction and showcase the resources for people affected by the disease.

The Longest Day is the Alzheimer’s Association’s signature ABAM event, named for the summer solstice. On this day with the most light (June 21, 2023), individuals join the fight against Alzheimer’s and dementia by creating their own fundraising events — to honor loved ones and support the programs and research of the Alzheimer’s Association. (While Longest Day events often happen in June, they can actually take place any day of the year.)

“What’s remarkable about The Longest Day is that people can contribute to this cause in so many inventive and creative ways,” said Maura Stauder who coordinates Longest Day events for the Association’s MN/ND chapter. “People take their passions and hobbies and turn them into really fun and meaningful events that contribute to the services we provide at the Association. One fundraiser traveled Minnesota in her purple canoe and another produced an ice-fishing contest in the depths of winter.”

Events frequently include baking, biking, hiking, golfing, knitting, playing bridge or board games. For more information or to create an event visit alz.org/thelongestday.

A sampling of June Longest Day events that individuals have planned to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association MN-ND are listed below and are open to the public.

About Alzheimer’s and Dementia

Currently more than six million people are living with Alzheimer’s in the United States and every six seconds someone in the country is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s takes more lives than breast and prostate cancer combined.

Growing evidence indicates that individuals can reduce their risk of cognitive decline by adopting key lifestyle habits, and it is never too late to incorporate healthy practices. The Association’s 10 Ways to Love your Brain recommendations include breaking a sweat, making dietary changes and buddying up for social activities.

About the Alzheimer’s Association

The Alzheimer’s Association is the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care, support and research. Our mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Our vision is a world without Alzheimer’s. Visit alz.org/mnnd or call the 24/7 Helpline 800.272.3900 for support.
