Dr Michal Solomonovich, a former teacher and mother of three, decided to turn her life around following a life threatening health trauma and devote herself to mentoring children equipping them with the necessary skills to thrive.
Her new book Champion! is co-written with life and business strategist Alon Ulman. The book is based around their Winners Code Junior Online Course in Israel which has helped thousands of Israeli children thrive and is approved on the database of educational programs for the Israeli Ministry of Education. The evidence-based life codes include lessons on building resilience, facing your fears to finding your tribe.
Why did you write this book?
I have been involved in the field of education and personal development with children for years. I wrote Champion! because I wanted to offer kids the tools; knowledge, methodology and mentoring that were not offered to me as a child. In the same way, you learn math through direct learning, you should also be able to learn how to succeed in life. It’s unfair that these tools are only available to adults, children deserve them too.
Furthermore, I wanted to provide a toolkit for parents, and educators, to speak to children and teenagers about personal development issues in a simple and accessible fashion, so they can support them to apply these tools in daily life.
Why is it important for kids to learn skills like resilience?
It is very important that children learn how to develop personal resilience from an early age. Kids who know how to set goals, build an action plan towards them and take small steps on a daily basis, will achieve much better results than those without intentional goals.
At the same time, developing resilience is extremely important because life is full of uncertainty and struggle, no one succeeds in everything straightaway. People differ in their ability to be robust and bounce back after facing difficulty.
There should be an emphasis on building resilience from a young age, as part of a greater goal of developing leadership. Children and young people who know how to lead, will also be able to lead others. The ability to be resilient, understand that you have an undesired result, and finesse and adjust the plan of action, will build greater self-confidence to achieve their goals more readily and lead a happier life.
These skills will serve them not only today when they are children but also in the future, as adults, in a competitive world that moves at a fast pace. Therefore, developing resilience is a vital tool that parents and educators should teach children.
Why is it important for kids to find their tribe - and how can they keep from getting discouraged if they don't find it right away?
The environment has a tremendous impact on a child's development and can foster a child’s dreams just as easily, as obstruct their development and put a glass ceiling over their head.
People are social creatures, therefore it is very important to allow a child to find their tribe and those friends they wish to spend time with, both in and out of school.
At the same time, sometimes a tribe can impact negatively in social situations. Also not every child has the same motivation to socialize. Social motivation is driven by the need to belong to a group. There are some children, where this is extremely important, and they need to spend all day with friends, then find it easy to study for a test and do homework under these circumstances. On the other hand, there are children whose social drive is low, who do not have the need to be surrounded by friends.
It is important that parents and educators are able to identify a child's negative friendships and adjust their tribe accordingly.
The ability to connect to a tribe is an acquired ability. It is true that children with social motivation will be able to do this more readily. At the same time, it is an ability that can be learned and developed.
It is very important to look at this issue as part of their personal development, not in competition with others as it will make it easier for them to chart their own progress.
