Book Nook - The Mission: The Duke of Darkness

Capturing the imagination of its readers (aged eight to twelve) from the get-go, Oliver Wood’s The Mission: The Duke of Darkness provides an outstanding introduction to his planned seven strong The Mission series.

With the young Alfie Andrews finding himself responsible for pretty much saving the world, and the author delivering everything required from a full-blown action adventure (hero, quest, dangerous environment and villain) young readers will revel in this adventure’s constant hum of suspense and its protagonist’s derring-do.

Parents or those reading the story aloud will also appreciate how the author subtly weaves in the importance of modesty, athleticism, courage, empathy and resilience (MACER), by making these personality traits the code name acronym for Alfie’s first secret mission.

With an ending that positions Alfie perfectly for future secret missions with The Organisation, Oliver Wood’s The Mission Series shows all the potential to enthral in a similar manner as Anthony Horowitz’s career changing  Alex Rider series continues to captivate the slightly older.

Synopsis:

A mission only a child can complete...

Alfie Andrews isn't special, or talented, or even popular. So why are two terrifying-looking men in dark suits watching him at school? And why is his teacher - Mr Spencer - telling Alfie's parents he can achieve great things? Life is about to change for Alfie and his friends Faz and Skye as they enter a dark world where their mission is to defeat the most dangerous villains the world is yet to meet.

For they have found what the planet wanted to hide...

About the author:

Oliver Wood was born in Birmingham, England, and spent his childhood exploring a den at the bottom of his garden - creating imaginary world after imaginary world.

One day, whilst teaching a group of rowdy Year 6 children at a local primary school, he came up with an idea for a series of children’s adventure books, called The Mission Series.  He really hopes you like the first one.

Oliver lives in Henley in Arden with his wife and three children - the twin boy and girl are proving to be a challenge.
