Healthy Habits: Dr. Gupta's Response Plan Addresses Emerging Drug Threat, Young People in Recovery Offers Solution

The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) recently unveiled a comprehensive response plan to combat the emerging drug threat posed by fentanyl adulterated or associated with xylazine. As part of this critical initiative, Young People in Recovery (YPR), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting youth and young adults in recovery from substance use disorder, stands ready to contribute to the solution.

Dr. Rahul Gupta, Director of ONDCP, designated the fentanyl-xylazine combination as an emerging drug threat, emphasizing the urgent need to address its devastating impact on public health. Fentanyl, a highly potent opioid, when combined with xylazine, a non-opioid drug, has led to fatal overdoses and severe morbidity, posing a significant challenge to individuals and communities across the United States.

YPR, with its extensive reach and expertise in supporting young people in recovery, is well-positioned to be a vital part of the solution. With 54 chapters spanning 19 states, YPR envisions a world where all young people have the resources they need to thrive in recovery from addiction to drugs and alcohol. Their mission is to provide life skills and peer supports that empower young individuals to recover from substance use disorder and achieve their full potential.

By combining evidence-based practices with a peer-led approach, YPR equips young people with the tools necessary to navigate the challenges of recovery. Through their initiatives, such as peer-led recovery meetings and pro-social events, educational workshops, life-skills programs, advocacy efforts focused on harm reduction, and educational campaigns, YPR has already made a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals seeking recovery.

"We are deeply committed to supporting young people on their journey to recovery," said Ann Herbst, Executive Director of YPR. "The emergence of fentanyl-xylazine combination underscores the urgency to provide comprehensive solutions that address the unique needs of this vulnerable population. YPR stands ready to collaborate with the ONDCP and other stakeholders to implement effective strategies that save lives and promote lasting recovery."

YPR's multifaceted approach encompasses not only recovery support but also focuses on prevention, education, and community engagement. By fostering a supportive environment and offering resources tailored to the specific needs of young individuals, YPR is leading the charge in combating substance use disorder among this demographic.
