What is a ‘push party’ and how does it differ from a traditional baby shower?
The concept of a ‘push present’ has been steadily growing in popularity over the last decade, referring to a gift given to a new parent, which recognises their hard work during childbirth and to commemorate their journey into parenthood, after they have ‘pushed’.
We’re seeing a growing number of people purchase push presents as a way to show gratitude and love towards their pregnant partners, to commemorate such an important day in their lives and celebrate the role they have played in bringing new life into the world.
A ‘push party’ has the same principles as this - the idea is to celebrate not only the arrival of the new baby, but the parents-to-be, opposed to having the focus solely on the baby, which is a tradition of many baby showers. This often means that the gifts given at these events are for the expectant parent, so no nappies and baby grows, but gift vouchers and candles instead.
The push party differentiates in many ways from a baby shower, as it welcomes guests of all genders and is not just a women-only affair. The themes of push parties tend to be very different as well - it's less gifts and baby games, like guessing the size of the bump, and more focused on the parent to be - so either relaxing or celebrating their journey.
For instance, back in 2017, Beyoncé and Jay Z hosted an African-themed ‘Push Party’, which celebrated the upcoming birth of her twins. The party was filled with famous faces, including Lala Anthony and Kelly Rowland. Beyonce shared snapshots of the evening, dancing with her partner and celebrating the journey they were ready to embark on together.
Most recently, Serena Williams hosted her own push party, which was filled with friends and family. The spa day was all about celebrating the soon-to-be mother and her pregnancy journey. Similar to Serena and Beyonce, push parties are traditionally for the birth of the second or third child, as they will have often already experienced a traditional baby shower.
Why are ‘push parties’ growing in popularity?
Push parties are a celebration of new life entering into the world and the journey taken by parents. It’s recognition of the hard work from the parents to be, in particular the pregnant parent, as they undertake a lot of stress to create and nurture their babies.
From morning sickness and acne and pains, to lack of sleep, pregnancy can take its toll on the body and mind, so it's an opportunity for others to show support, pamper and celebrate you. The rise in popularity of push parties comes from more parents wanting to celebrate their journey to parenthood, as opposed to just celebrating the impending birth of their new child.
Celebrities are driving this huge pregnancy empowerment trend, showing pregnant people that they should be celebrated for their hard work and that traditional baby showers, which are solely about the baby, are becoming a little outdated.
Tips on hosting the ultimate push party:
Adult-friendly games and activities
Traditional baby showers are filled with games like guessing the weight of the baby, what’s hidden in the nappy and how well do you know the pregnant parent. Push parties are very different in this sense, as it's all about adult-friendly games and activities to keep guests happy and entertained and most importantly, focused on what the soon-to-be parents will enjoy.
This can be anything from classic drinking games (for the guests and not pregnant parents-to-be), like beer or prosecco pong and card games, to traditional party activities such as pictionary, murder mystery or a scavenger hunt.
These games and activities can have a parenthood, paternity and maternity or baby theme to make them fitted to the celebration, for instance, you could include baby bottle shots.
Gender inclusive guest list
A push party is a celebration of life, and what better way to celebrate than inviting all your family and friends? The guest list should not be limited and should be gender inclusive - so everyone can get involved and celebrate the expecting parents and arrival of their new baby.
Pick the perfect party theme
The main focus of the party should be to celebrate the parents, so ensure that the theme is in-fitting with their personality and likes. This could be anything from an extravagant get together with friends and family, to something more low-key like a spa day or a meal at their favourite restaurant - remember: the day is all about showering the parents with love!
Just have fun
Parents are getting ready to enter into a new chapter in their lives, so the push party should be a time for them to relax, unwind and have fun! At this stage, parents will be preparing for sleepless nights, early mornings and the pressure of raising a child, so this should be an opportunity for them to just have fun, without any worries or pressure.
