Children with Learning Disabilities are often very anxious about school ,so to help them prepare and feel less anxious about starting the school year here are some tips.

1. It is important to talk about specific goals for the upcoming school year before starting. Try to focus and what the child fears most and how that can change. They often feel like they are never going to improve, letting them know that things can change and that they can find many things they thought difficult can become much easier with consistent effort.

2. have them focus on the things they like about school, seeing friends ,playing sports, going to social events if they enjoy that. If they are afraid of social situations try to talk about what they are afraid of and use examples of when they have had successful social interactions.

3. Focus on their strengths ,most kids with disabilities are amazing and even gifted at other skills

4. The most important thing is to actually help them overcome their disability, in my book Disconnected Kids I explain the root cause of most disabilities and give activities to overcome them. Helping to help the child take control of their own mental and physical health and helping them to correct a disability is the best long-term answer.
