Caring Causes - WelcomeNST

Most people are aware of the global refugee crisis, particularly with the persistent conflicts currently headlining the news worldwide. What they don’t realize is the astounding number of them that exist. Nor do they know what to do to help or how to offer assistance to those in dire need. One organization is on a mission to change that, making it simple to help refugees. WelcomeNST is leading a movement that transcends borders and labels.

“Most people want to help refugees, but don’t know where to start or what to do," explains Elizabeth Davis-Edwards, founder of WelcomeNST. "Through Neighborhood Support Teams (NSTs), we're not just helping families, we're transforming lives and building bridges between neighbors."

According to the United Nations, there are more than 110 million refugees in the world who have been forced to flee their homes. It’s a global crisis, where people have had to flee their homes due to war, violence, or persecution. Some live in refugee camps, while others don’t know where they will sleep each night. The lucky ones are able to receive assistance through an organization like WelcomeNST.

The U.S. State Department has asked WelcomeNST to help with resettlement efforts. At its core, WelcomeNST embodies the belief that every human being deserves dignity, safety, and opportunity. Far more than a response to a refugee crisis, it is a testament to the power of humanity joining hands to uplift one another. They create Neighborhood Support Teams (NST), a dynamic approach that stands as a beacon of hope and change. An NST is a community-driven initiative that rallies together to provide comprehensive support for refugee families seeking to rebuild their lives.

These dedicated teams are the cornerstone of a community-based resettlement system, working tirelessly to create sustainable pathways to self-sufficiency for refugee families.  As such, an NST is started by one person, who bands together with their friends, fellow church-goers or neighbors to provide the following for one refugee family:

  • Financial support to self-sufficiency. Each NST raises $20,000 to $25,000 on average, providing essential financial backing to ensure a family's journey towards self-sufficiency.
  • Housing Solutions. NSTs find suitable housing, creating a stable foundation for refugees to thrive.
  • Guidance and Friendship.  NSTs commit to supporting refugee families for a period of 6 to 12 months, offering consistent guidance and friendship as they restart their lives.
  • Customized Self-Sufficiency Plans. Working hand-in-hand with refugees, NSTs develop tailored plans that enable them to achieve independence and stability.

WelcomeNST's innovative approach relies on the power of communities. The organization offers a new method of resettlement that harnesses the innate power of each community one family at a time. This unique approach puts the keys to the American Dream in the hands of Americans, and opens our doors for more people to  pave the way to a brighter future for all.
