Fun Freetime - Eye Color Changes for Halloween

A new LensLuxe study ranks U.S. states by the estimated number of residents using colored contact lenses to change their eye color for Halloween costumes.

The analysis shows smaller states have the most people changing their eye colors per capita during October, likely driven by interest in costume contacts for Halloween events.

This study was done while using search volume for all states of the U.S for the last 12 months with Google Keyword Planner using these keywords: ‘Color contact lenses’, ‘Halloween contact lenses’, ‘Best halloween contact lenses’, ‘contact lenses near me’. It revealed spikes in October as people planned costumes.

To estimate actual usage, October search surges were adjusted for state populations to

calculate people with eye color changes per 10,000 residents.

Key findings by state:

1: District of Columbia

Washington D.C. ranks first in estimated eye color changes per 10,000 residents in October at 269, likely reflecting high costume demand in its dense, urban population.

2: Utah

With a concentration of costume interest in select cities, Utah comes in second for most eye color changes per capita at 218.

3: Nevada

Nevada ranks third for most eye color changes per 10,000 residents at 185, driven by colorful Las Vegas costume events that inspire eye-catching looks.

4: Wyoming

Despite a small total population, Wyoming still sees a high rate of 184 eye color changes per 10,000 in fourth place, demonstrating concentrated interest.

5: North Dakota

North Dakota takes the fifth spot, with 177 eye color changes per 10,000 residents, as its tiny population amplifies the impact of even localized surges for costumes.

6: Rhode Island

Sixth-ranked Rhode Island sees 176 impressive eye color changes per capita, defying expectations for such a small state.

7: Hawaii

Geographic isolation appears to play a role in Hawaii’s seventh-place ranking at 172 eye color changes per 10,000, with remoteness potentially increasing creative costume preparation.

8: New Mexico

With a sparse western population clustered around key cities, New Mexico comes in eighth for most eye color changes per 10,000 residents at 169.

9: Alaska

Alaska’s small, dispersed population allows robust interest in eye-catching costume contact lenses to rank the state ninth at 167 changes per 10,000.

10: Idaho

Idaho rounds out the top ten states with 164 high eye color changes per capita, as its modest 1.8 million residents enable concentrated demand.

Methodology

  • To analyze consumer interest in colored contact lenses around Halloween, they compiled search volume data for each state over a 12-month period.

  • Using Google's Keyword Planner, they tracked monthly search frequency for "colored contact lenses" across all 50 states and Washington D.C. from August 2022 to July 2023. This allowed them to identify seasonal patterns.

  • Monthly search totals were recorded per state. They identified October 2022 as the peak month, correlating to increased searches around Halloween costume planning.

  • To quantify the October spikes, they calculated percent increases versus average monthly search volumes from August 2022 to July 2023. October totals were also adjusted for state populations to produce normalized search rates per 10,000 residents.

The data offers a fun look into how events and creative costumes inspire people to temporarily transform their eye color.
