Fun Freetime - From Pumpkins to Skeletons, These Are the Most Popular Halloween Decorations in Each State

  • The study found that the East Coast has a thing for Skeletons while the West Coast likes the classic pumpkins.
  • Spiders, witches, tombstones and ghosts were also up there on the list of things Americans are shopping for this season.
  • Georgia and Florida wanted to go spooky with decorations inspired by Stranger Things and Wednesday TV shows.
  • Alaska and Hawaii are the only states that choose candelabras and coffins as their preferred decorations for this Halloween.

As Halloween fast approaches it is no surprise that searches for the most popular Halloween decorations have skyrocketed across the internet

A new study has revealed the most popular decorations across the US - and, surprisingly, pumpkins weren't the most popular.

Meble Furniture reached this conclusion by analyzing over 5,000 Halloween decoration search terms on Google to discover the most popular Halloween decorations in each state, exclusively for search terms indicating intent to purchase.

Surprisingly, the study found that the most popular Halloween decorations nationwide are skeletons and it tops people’s love of pumpkins, witches, spiders and bat decorations.

Looking at trends across the entire country, it seems that the East Coast has a thing with Skeletons with this bone-chilling decoration dominating search terms across Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.

Pumpkins on the other hand are a hugely popular pick among the West Coast, appearing as the top search term in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Utah and Nevada.

Elsewhere, Spiders are popular in the Midwest with states like Indiana, Montana, Kansas, Wisconsin and Ohio enjoying this type of decoration the most.

Other popular picks included Witches which were popular in Kentucky, New York, Maryland, Vermont, Michigan and Virginia.

Ghosts and Tombstones are still highly popular options, too, as the most-searched-for type of decoration. Clowns were also up there on the list of things Americans are shopping for this season.

Other states chose more specific pieces of decorations. Arizona and New Mexico chose Corn Stalks, Alabama and Illinois selected Crows while Colorado and Pennsylvania opted for Bats.

But, we’d like to give a special shout-out to Wyoming and Nebraska for preferring Michael Myers decorations more than most. There is perhaps no other decoration that’s as creepy.

There were also some decorations that were chosen only by one state. People in Hawaii are partial to a Coffin decoration at Halloween, while Alaska loves to decorate with Candelabras.

Interestingly enough, Georgians are also the only folks who like to decorate with Demogorgons drawing inspiration from the TV show "Stranger Things". This was genuinely surprising and very different from the typical and more conventional Halloween decor choices observed in other states.

And if things were not creepy enough, Florida’s go-to Halloween decoration turned out to be Addams family decorations also inspired by the TV show “Wednesday.

While one might expect Floridians to opt for hanging spider webs from palm trees as their go-to Halloween decoration, it turns out they have a penchant for adorning their homes with none other than the eerie TV show that gained immense popularity last year, inspiring many with its creepy vibes.

Raf Michalowski, interior designer and CEO of Meble Furniture commented on the findings:

"Halloween enthusiasts have diverse preferences, with some aiming to ramp up the scare factor and others opting for a cozy, fall-inspired aesthetic complete with friendly, grinning pumpkins. Irrespective of individual styles, certain iconic symbols of the Halloween holiday, such as skeletons, pumpkins, spiders, and witches, seem to remain universally cherished.

Whether you will be inspired by Florida and incorporate elements from the Wednesday TV show, or perhaps you'll follow the East states crowd with some Skeletons... One thing seems to be sure, we're not limiting ourselves to a couple of jack o'lanterns on our doorsteps this year."
