Travel Tidbits - Intergenerational Travel

Road Scholar, a leader in educational travel for older adults, kicked off their 38th Grandparent Adventure season this summer. I had a chance to interview one of the participants to learn more.

Jean Sifleet has taken her grandson, TJ on three Road Scholar trips, and her daughter, Stacy, is scheduled to join them in Italy next June on a Road Scholar family trip.

Why do you love to travel?
JDS: I enjoy experiencing new places and learning from the people, their cultures and histories. When I travel, I really pay attention.

What are some things to consider with multigenerational travel?
JDS: The trip needs to be engaging for all ages. You can’t expect young travelers to admire a lot of old buildings. There needs to be an engaging activity that makes the experience relevant to them.

Why can traveling with grandparents/grandkids be so beneficial for both?
JDS: When traveling with your grandchildren, you are sharing a learning experience that is outside the day to day. That shared experience is eye opening for all involved. You step out of your roles and learn something new together.

Road Scholar is the nation’s largest not-for-profit educational travel organization for adults — a true university of the world — offering thousands of programs in nearly 100 countries and 50 states. Road Scholar educational adventures are created by Elderhostel, the world leader in educational travel since 1975. Road Scholar has been offering programs for grandparents and their grandkids since 1985. Learn more at www.roadscholar.org/about
