Amid historic disinformation and polarization, it is a difficult time for journalists. Jobs have dropped 26% since 2008, the U.S. fell to No. 45 in the 2023 World Press Freedom Index following two murders, and only 26% of Americans have a favorable opinion of the media.
With unprecedented challenges at home, and two wars abroad, the role of journalism in our democracy has never been more critical. Some states offer better conditions for reporters in and out of the newsroom.
Prism PR today released a study on the Best & Worst States for Journalists using the most recent data from BLS, Department of Labor’s Projections Central, the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, and others.
The five best states are Kansas, Nevada, Utah, New Jersey, and Tennessee. The five worst are California, Minnesota, Oregon, West Virginia, and Maine.
