Roanoke in Virginia's Blue Ridge was named 2023's Top Large Adventure Town by readers of Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine after four rounds of public voting, beating out Chattanooga, TN and Asheville, NC in the finals. With over 1,000 miles of trails, the Roanoke Valley in Virginia's Blue Ridge has established itself as a premier destination for outdoor recreation and adventure of all types.
Roanoke is the largest city on the Appalachian Trail and the largest metro area along Virginia's portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The region is also the first IMBA Silver-Level Ride Center on the East Coast. Many visitors from around the country plan vacations to Roanoke for experiences like hiking the Virginia Triple Crown or mountain biking at Carvins Cove.
In addition to trails for hiking and biking, there are several ways to get on the water in Virginia's Blue Ridge. Visitors can take paddling trips down the Roanoke River or Upper James River Water Trail with local outfitters. In Franklin County, Smith Mountain Lake and Philpott Lake are popular locations for fishing.
This year's win marks Roanoke's 6th Top Town title in the past 12 years of competition. Visit VBR would also like to congratulate a fellow Virginia destination and neighbor, Bedford, for winning the Top Small Adventure Town category.
