My husband and I have been married for almost 20 years. When he was going to propose to me, I knew he didn't have money - we were both still in college. My dad actually offered my mom's diamond, and gave her an updated ring for her 25th anniversary. It was pretty special.
Somewhere along the way, my husband thought he had lost his wedding ring, so he got himself a new wedding band. He did pick out a completely different style - not that he didn't like the original, he just figured as long as he was getting something new, he didn't want to try for an exact replica.Eventually, he actually found it again in a duffel bag. So now he has two - but he actually likes that, because one is gold and one is platinum, and they have very different looks. I have never replaced mine, because I really like the setting (the diamond is protected, so it doesn't snag, which was very important to me), although I have thought about it.
There are a lot of interesting trends in wedding bands now. I like the idea of the silicone wedding rings that I've seen. I've actually considered getting one myself, for a variety of reasons - color matching, durability, comfort when doing certain activities. It's amazing how many colors and patterns you can find them in now too!
I've been mentioning them as wedding bands, but obviously, they could be a symbol of any type of relationship. Promise rings, commitment rings, couples' rings - you don't have to wait until you're married to get a ring (or any other type of jewelry, for that matter).
My dad actually used different types of jewelry too. My mom had her wedding ring, but my dad often got her necklaces or bracelets for anniversaries, especially milestone anniversaries. Anniversary gifts can be any type of jewelry - if that's something your significant other likes, of course. If jewelry isn't their thing, then it obviously makes a terrible gift!
Do you do anything special to visibly symbolize your relationship? Or do you have a ring that you don't often wear? I love my ring, but I don't always wear it - my hands shrink when they're cold and the ring would fall off, so I really have to be careful if I'm wearing it in the winter!
