It might be convenient, but using the iron in your hotel room can come with hidden dangers
After getting your clothes out of your suitcase, you’ll be understandably keen to use an iron to get rid of all the creases they’ll have accumulated while in transit. The hotel iron that came free with your room might seem like an easy, convenient option, but you should think twice before firing it up.
Mark Johnson, the founder of H18YC, discusses why it’s never wise to use the hotel room iron.
Hygiene Concerns
Unlike with other items in hotel rooms, it’s not standard practice to clean hotel irons every time a set of guests leave. When they are cleaned, it’s rarely done thoroughly.
As a result, hotel irons almost certainly harbor germs and bacteria from previous users. Using one on your clothes could end with you catching something from the previous guest - and also, it’s just kind of gross!
Stains And Residue
The iron may have accumulated stains and other residue from the garments of previous users. If you use a hotel iron with previous stains still on it, you risk transferring them onto your clothing, leaving your garments with unsightly marks that could be challenging to remove.
Low-Quality Irons
Hotel irons are usually cheaper and of lower quality than those used by homeowners, meaning they may not have the same temperature control or steam capabilities, increasing the likelihood of damaging delicate fabrics. If a hotel iron is old and rusty, the iron oxide could be unwittingly transferred onto your clothes.
Fire Hazards
This can be a risk if the iron is left unattended or if there’s a problem with the wiring. If it’s accidentally left on or if it malfunctions, it could endanger both guests and property. Considering that hotel irons are usually of lower quality and may not often be checked, this should be a serious consideration to take into account before deciding to use the hotel iron.
Better Options
Mark says, ‘Portable travel irons and garment steamers are compact devices designed for travel. They offer superior control, hygiene, and efficiency. If you use garment bags for your clothing, they’ll keep them wrinkle-free during travel. This could eliminate the need for ironing altogether.’
Many hotels offer laundry and dry-cleaning services for guests. While a fee may be involved, this option ensures your clothes are professionally cleaned and pressed, dispelling any concerns about hygiene, stains, or damage. If you do use a hotel iron, put a wet towel over your clothing to protect it.
These small appliances can be risky to use, so it’s encouraging to know you have alternatives. Of course, at the end of the day it’s your choice, but keep these points in mind before you decide to use your hotel iron.
