Thrifty Thinking - Which US States Are Most Obsessed to Save Money in 2023

 New data reveals the US states that are googling for ways to save money the most.

 
The data compiled by the research team at an insurance company, 123.ie, analyzed over 5K search terms related to money-saving tips across every US state to establish which states are the most interested in saving money.
 
Vermont took the top spot, with 1,556 average monthly searches per 100K residents made in regard to money-saving tips. In fact, the Green Mountain State residents googled terms seeking professional financial guidance, with the term ‘financial advisors near me’ more than any other type of term.
 
Rhode Island follows closely behind, securing the second position. Residents in Rhode Island search for terms related to saving money at a rate of 1,497 monthly searches per 100K residents. Rhode Island’s most googled term in relation to saving money is ‘how to save money.’ 
 
In third place is Delaware, with 1,458 average monthly searches being made per 100K residents. Residents in the state searched for the term ‘how to save money’ more than any other term. 

The state searching at the fourth highest rate for saving money is New Hampshire, with 1,377 monthly searches per 100K residents. New Hampshire residents are searching for the term ‘how to save money fast’ more than anything else, indicating a drive for immediate financial improvement. 

Maine ranks fifth with residents making 1,365 monthly searches per 100K for terms related to saving money. The term '50 30 20 rule' stands out as the most searched, suggesting a focus on budgeting and financial planning methods. 

North Dakota residents search for money-saving tips at a rate of 1,324 monthly searches per 100K, meaning the state ranks sixth. Residents search the most for the term ‘how to save money on a home’ more than any other term, revealing a significant interest in homeownership and cost-saving strategies in this state.
 
Oregon follows behind in seventh, with 1,268 searches made per 100K each month for terms related to saving money with their top searched term being ‘money saving tips’. 
 
Alaska ranks eighth out of all states when it comes to searching for money-saving tips. Alaska residents search at a rate of 1,259 monthly searches made per 100K residents, with ‘retirement calculators’ topping the most search terms, signalling a focus on securing financial well-being in later years.
 
Wyoming and Hawaii round out the top ten respectively. In Wyoming, there are 1,254 searches per 100K residents made each month for money help, with the top searched term being ‘money-saving techniques’, while in Hawaii, there are 1,194 monthly searches made per 100k with the top searched term in the state being ‘financial advisor’
 
A spokesperson from 123.ie commented on the findings:
“In today's challenging economic landscape, it's important to be smart with your money.

Start by looking at your daily habits and making small money-saving tweaks. Cancel those subscriptions you don't really need, cook at home instead of eating out, and use shopping apps and websites to find the best bargains.

Based on the study search volume analysis, people are also seeking the help of financial advisors, which is a great idea because they can give you personalized advice to help you make smart choices about things like investing and dealing with debts.” 
 

Methodology
The team at 123.ie obtained information from Google search data regarding which states have shown the most interest in saving money over the last 12 months. 

The study looked at specific keywords and phrases that were searched on Google, such as “how to save money,” “money-saving tips,” “financial advisors near me” etc.

The team then calculated the total number of searches for each state for 100,000 people and ranked the states from the highest to the lowest searches.
