Smart Safety - Dietary Supplements

Prevention begins at home. A new report highlights that during 2019- 2022 there were 11,000 Emergency Department visits for unsupervised melatonin ingestions by young children. This number represents an estimated 420% increase in young children ending up in the emergency department for accidentally ingesting melatonin. The news is a wakeup call for parents, grandparents and caregivers during National Poison Prevention Week that there is more work to be done.

As more dietary supplements come in gummy form, the Up and Away campaign, in collaboration with CDC and the PROTECT Initiative, is reminding parents, grandparents, and other caregivers to keep medicine safety top of mind. National Poison Prevention Week is a good time to remind everyone to keep all medicines, vitamins, and other supplements, including those in gummy form, Up and Away, out of sight and reach of young children.
