Quilting is a hobby passed through generations, but it doesn’t have to be.
Corey Pearson, Master Quilter and VP of Customer Success at Linda’s Electric Quilters, believes that quilting doesn’t have to be intimidating, and he wants to help you get started!
Here are Corey’s Three Steps for Beginner Quilters
STEP 1: Know what you’re getting into
The quilting community is extremely welcoming, but it’s easy to be overwhelmed with information. I would definitely start my first quilt by making a Jelly Roll quilt. They are super easy quilt tops to make and each are unique. This tutorial will help you get started with confidence.
STEP 2: Invest in the right tools
Having the right tools can set you up for success, and when it comes to sewing machines it’s better to buy it nice than to buy it twice. The Juki TL 18-QVP, Janome HD3000, and Juki HZL-G220 are a few sewing machines I recommend that will last and do the job right.
STEP 3: Avoid overspending on unnecessary items
Since quilting involves the artful mixing of different fabrics, colors and patterns, it is easy to overspend on fabric before you are committed to the hobby. That’s why we recommend using a jelly roll. Jelly rolls are rolls of pre-cut fabric designed to go together, and there are plenty of beginner-friendly patterns available online made just for jelly rolls.
