The Senate passed the bill forcing TikTok’s parent company to sell or face ban.
The legislation gives ByteDance nine months to sell TikTok, and a possible three-month extension if a sale is in progress.
The bill would also bar the company from controlling TikTok’s secret sauce: the algorithm that feeds users videos based on their interests and has made the platform a trendsetting phenomenon.
How will this impact small businesses who use TikTok as a platform to attract customers and sell their products/services?
“Social media platforms like TikTok have become necessary for small businesses to build their brand and attract customers. In a free market, we should be able to use these platforms. A ban of such a major site like TikTok is a huge blow to small businesses in the United States. We’ve been able to connect with our customers and teach them how to use our products in ways we weren’t able to previously. Losing that way to connect with people is disheartening and concerning,” shares Corey Pearson, VP of Customer Success at Linda’s Electric Quilters.

Why can TikTok be beneficial for small businesses?
TikTok offers small businesses a unique platform to reach a diverse and extensive audience through engaging, short-form video content. The platform's algorithm is particularly adept at promoting content to users who are likely to find it relevant, thus enhancing visibility and engagement rates. This can lead to increased brand awareness, customer interaction, and potentially, higher conversion rates as businesses are able to showcase their products and services in a dynamic and accessible manner.
How have people been able to find creative inspiration using TikTok?
TikTok has emerged as a rich source of creative inspiration due to its vast array of content spanning numerous genres and interests. Users can explore trends, watch tutorials, and interact with content from creators worldwide, which fosters an environment of innovation and creativity. The platform encourages experimentation and the adoption of new ideas, which can inspire users to develop unique content or creative projects of their own.
What makes TikTok such a strong platform?
TikTok's strength lies in its highly personalized user experience, driven by an algorithm that curates content based on individual preferences and interactions. This tailored approach ensures that users are consistently presented with videos that resonate with their interests, leading to longer engagement times. Additionally, the platform supports a wide range of content types, from entertainment to educational material, making it versatile and appealing to a broad audience.
What are some ways brands can connect with customers outside of TikTok?
Brands can connect with customers outside of TikTok through several effective strategies. Engaging with customers via other social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook allows brands to maintain a consistent presence across multiple channels. Email newsletters and personalized marketing campaigns can also be instrumental in nurturing customer relationships. Furthermore, hosting live events or webinars provides an opportunity for direct interaction, while implementing loyalty programs encourages ongoing engagement and rewards customers for their loyalty.
