Fun Fashion - Pregnant celebrities daring to bare their bumps: Trends expert on the maternity fashion choices of A-Listers

Actress Margot Robbie has this week announced she is expecting her first child with husband Tom Ackerley, after being photographed in Italy with an outfit showcasing her exposed stomach and prominent baby bump.

Below, Nick Drewe, trends expert and founder of online platform Wethrift.comshares some insight on the choice for celebrities to highlight their baby bumps with their pregnancy fashion choices:

"Debuting a baby bump during outings where the paparazzi are likely to be on the lookout for photo opportunities is essentially an A-listers way of unofficially announcing an unconfirmed or rumoured pregnancy to the rest of the world.

"In Margot Robbie's case, the pictures of her and her husband in Italy taken this past week - where the notoriously private actress and producer is displaying a fuller stomach and small baby bump - the choice of outfit was undoubtedly intentional to send a message.

"In recent years, the trend of using fashion to highlight and display a growing baby bump has become a popular way for celebrities such as Rihanna, Sofia Richie, and Hailey Bieber to take back control of their pregnancies.

"Rather than covering up with oversized outfits and being careful of angles, they are instead embracing their bumps and choosing fitted clothing and styles that accentuate their stomachs, rather than covering them up.

"Many women feel at their most body confident and beautiful during pregnancy, and as such will use the months before giving birth to make bolder fashion choices and play around with the preconceived notion of what is and isn't acceptable when it comes to maternity fashion.

"Where celebrities tread, the general public will follow. Therefore, we expect to see retailers with maternity lines following this emerging trend and continue to expand on more affordable options for pregnant people. Options that - while still maintaining comfort - focus on accentuating bumps and allow individuals to display them proudly."
