Fun Freetime - The Wiggles: Wiggle and Learn Interview

The Wiggles recently released their 100th album, and are continuing to reach new audiences with their YouTube series Wiggle and Learn. I had a chance to interview one of the original members and his daughter to learn more! Check out their music and their channel to see what contributes to this band's longevity.

From Anthony Field
What factors contribute to the longevity of the group?
The Wiggles were formed at University in Sydney , whilst studying Early Childhood Education. From day one, our ethos had been a child centered approach to all our music making , TV and live show appearances!

We have always endeavored to make our child viewer/listener feel welcomed and accepted for who they are. Also I think we make entertainment that can be enjoyed by both the child and the adult alike, co-viewing! Fun is also such a big part of what we do and that never goes out of date!

How has the group adapted to reach new audiences?
We are constantly evolving and creating new TV/music. We have just finished a brilliant new series called “Wiggle and Learn” which the Wiggle Fans can access on YouTube! The Wiggles are now 8 members, so it’s twice the fun!

From Lucia Field
What makes The Wiggles a great group to be a part of?
We are such a tight-knit group that really feels like one big family! Everyone supports each other on and off stage, it’s such an easy environment to work in. I’m constantly inspired by each and every person who comes through Wiggle town! Being able to be a part of this group means we get to contribute to a child’s joy, learning, and development. Children react authentically, and their excitement can really be infectious. It makes performances and recordings almost feel like a shared adventure! Knowing that our work will make a lasting, positive difference in their lives is more than I, or anyone could ask for.

What makes creating kids' music such a fun job?
Creating children’s music is so much fun! Whenever I walk into the recording studio, I’m instantly inspired (whether it’s Dad playing the Bouzouki or Guitar, or Lachy playing the Keyboard!) I'm a drummer, so I get really excited when I hear a faster-paced song that I might get to drum on! Most of the time, we will have a prompt or theme for a song that we will workshop until it’s just right. Since these songs are for children, we don’t have to be as serious in our songwriting, which gives us a lot more freedom with how the song will go. Once we release the song or play it live, getting to see the children’s reactions is absolutely priceless!
