Going Green - EV Buses

As students head back to school in the coming weeks, a new national survey on school transportation shows families want new, improved – and GREEN—buses in their communities.

A new poll on school transportation shows 84% of parents believe their local school bus system could be improved.

Parents are eager to see buses outfitted with the latest technology. More than 80% of parents say they would use a mobile app that will help them better track the bus route and their children. More than 50% of parents say their child has missed the bus because they did not know when the bus was arriving.,

Now there are buses that have an AI supported system in place that helps reduce the time kids spend on the bus, with an average 98% on-time drop-off at the more than 4,000 schools the company serves. These vehicles also allow parents to use an app to make sure their kids are safe; telling them when the bus is arriving, when their child is on board, dropped off at school, and dropped off at the bus stop after school. These buses are operating in several states (including parts of CA, CT, IL, MD, MI, MO, NE, TX, VA & WA).

There’s also desire for new & improved buses extends to green technology.

A new type of bus that some are calling it a “magical” school bus – is a 100% electric vehicle (EV) that also feeds power stored in the batteries of the bus back to a power grid. It’s called vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. Instead of a one-way charge back into the EV bus, the vehicles will be able to send their battery power back to a community power grid through the bus company’s charging infrastructure.

In this interview Meaghan Murphy, Zum Ambassador, shares more about the new national student transportation poll, the benefits of transitioning to EV school buses, their impact on the environment and how they can become a significant source of energy for utility power grids in the future.
