The rise of the gig economy has been the proverbial talk of the town. Temporary, flexible, and freelance jobs, most often using online platforms, continue to gain popularity. Meanwhile, the U.S. job market seems to be overflowing with traditional work opportunities, leaving everyone wondering why so many workers are shifting from conventional employment to the gig economy.
Zety polled nearly 1000 Americans to explore what makes workers choose gig work, how long do they see themselves staying in that employment model, and what are the factors that make it attractive compared to a typical full-time job.
Here are some of the key findings:
- 54% of respondents plan to find a full-time job in the next year, but still want to do a gig job on the side.
- 88% of workers would consider doing the gig job until retirement.
- It’s not all about the money. Independence (58%), flexibility (50%), and variety (43%) are the top advantages of gig jobs.
- The main disadvantages are lack of employee benefits (39%), irregular working hours (37%), and unstable income (35%).
- For 59%, a gig job is their main source of income. But it’s not coming all from one place: 84% of gig workers work for more than one company.
- Sadly, the gig economy has a dark side, too: 88% of respondents had at least once been mistreated when completing a job. 81% at least once felt unsafe, while 70% experienced sexual advances.
“From the point of view of gig jobs, it's important to pay more attention to treating employees fairly, ensuring their psychological comfort and safety, and minimizing situations that expose them to danger and stress.” said Jacques Buffett, Career Expert at Zety
.
Methodology
The findings presented were obtained by surveying 985 unique respondents via a bespoke online polling tool. All respondents included in the study passed an attention-check question. The study was created through research, crowdsourcing, and surveying.
