The Ann Bancroft Foundation will host its first-ever Girlhood Summit 2024 on Saturday, November 2 from 8:45am-3:30pm at the Minnesota History Center in Saint Paul. The event is a day filled with programming and fun activities designed to empower and inspire girl-identifying middle and high school youth. There is no cost to attend, making the summit accessible to girl-identifying youth throughout Minnesota.
The summit includes inspiring keynote presentations and panels featuring trailblazing women who have shattered ceilings and are leading the way in various fields. Interactive workshops will provide hands-on opportunities for girls to learn about career exploration, personal finance, mental health, STEM education, and entrepreneurial design thinking. Young leaders will share their experiences and visions for a brighter future for girls, and the Smithsonian’s “Girlhood (It’s Complicated)” exhibit will portray and powerful exploration of what it means to grow up as a girl in the United States.
“At the Ann Bancroft Foundation we are passionate about making a difference in the lives of those who identify as girls, especially during their formative years, and we strive to support them in achieving their dreams,” said Ethelind B. Kaba, executive director, Ann Bancroft Foundation. “We created the Girlhood Summit to bring together girl-identifying youth from across Minnesota for a day of empowering and inspiring programming with unique and fun activities they can enjoy with their peers. It’s our hope that this experience will help create a positive impact on their journey toward womanhood and bring a clear vision of how they can attain their dreams and reach their full potential.”
Summit activities are tailored for youth but the two key sessions, the “Panel of Firsts” and “Trailblazers Rising: Talks from Youth,” will be open to the public, including parents, mentors, educators, community leaders, and anyone interested in celebrating pioneers and supporting the voices and achievements of the next generation of leaders.
Speakers include Ann Bancroft, polar explorer, educator, and founder of Ann Bancroft Foundation; Aaliyah Murray, 19-year-old social justice activist and founder, Minnesota Teen Activists & Global Teen Activist; Ethelind B. Kaba, executive director, Ann Bancroft Foundation and founder of The Stargirl Initiative, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering teen and tween girls; Dr. Gigi Chawla, chief of General Pediatrics, Children’s Minnesota; Jorja Wozniak, founder of Youth in Law, an organization that connects students to mentors in the government center; McKenzie Moore, student and community volunteer who works with V3 Sports; and many others. About the Ann Bancroft Foundation:
The Ann Bancroft Foundation envisions a world in which all who identify as a girl have a chance to live their dream and reach their full potential. The organization’s mission is to support girls to live their dreams and imagine something bigger through grants, mentorship and ongoing development opportunities. The Ann Bancroft Foundation believes investing in girls by increasing access to transformative experiences builds competence, confidence, connection, character and caring (the 5 C’s of positive youth development), and disrupts the impacts of gender inequities by:
• Helping girls build skills to navigate the challenges they face today, and
• Laying the foundation for future successes that strengthen our communities.
The Ann Bancroft Foundation centers and amplifies the voices of girls, listens to the dreams they see themselves, and surrounds them with a supportive network that encourages their confidence to dream and imagine something bigger.
