Most Common Misspelled Names

Whether you have one of the simplest names in the world or one that is more unique, there’s no doubt that at some point in your life, someone has managed to spell your name wrong.

But what are the most common ways that some of the most popular baby names in the UK are misspelt?

With this in mind, the team at QuillBot has rounded up the most popular baby names for girls and boys over the past year and analysed Google Search data to reveal the most common ways each name is misspelt.

1. Olivia

Most Common Misspelling: “Oliva"—missing out the second ‘I"—65,000 Monthly Searches

Olivia was revealed to be the most popular girl baby name in the UK last year. But despite being fairly simple, the name was most commonly misspelt as “Oliva” rather than "Olivia." By dropping the second "I,” the misspelling has a huge 65,000 monthly searches.

2. Amelia

Most Common Misspelling: “Amalia"—swapping the “E” for an "A"—73,000 73,000 Monthly Searches

Another popular baby name that often trips people up when it comes to spelling is the name Amelia. With 73,000 monthly Google searches for "Amalia," it seems people most commonly replace the “E” for an "A."

Perhaps this is unsurprising given that there is more than one way to spell the name Amelia, with an E instead of an A at the beginning of the name, like “Emelia.’”

3. Isla

Most Common Misspelling: “Ila"—omitting the “S” — 38,000 Monthly Searches

As a name that originated from Scotland, ‘Isla’ has been a popular baby girl's name for a few years now and is still among the top five in England.

But because the name has a silent "S,” many people often get the spelling wrong, with 38,000 monthly searches for “Ila” instead of "Isla."

4. Ava

Most Common Misspelling: “Avva"—adding an extra "V"—155,000 Monthly Searches

Another name that has been popular among girls in the past year is the name "Ava." While only a three-letter name, it is still possible to spell it wrong.

In fact, the most common misspelling on the popular name is "Avva." Adding an extra "V" to the name so it reads as “Av-Va.” The error was searched by a huge 155,000 monthly searches around the world.

5. Lily

Most Common Misspelling: “Lili"—Replacing the ‘Y” for an “I” — 97,000 Monthly Searches

Rounding off the most popular girls' names for the year was "Lily." Though there are plenty of ways to spell the name, such as "Lillie," the most common mistake people were making was spelling the name as "Lili," with 97,000 monthly searches for the confusion. As in “Li-li"—how it sounds phonetically, so an understandable mistake to make.

1. Noah

Most Common Misspelling: “Noa"—Omitting the silent “H”— 114,000 Monthly Searches

As the most popular baby name of the year in the UK, you’d think Noah would be a pretty straightforward name to spell. But it turns out that the name still stumps a lot of people.

In fact, the analysis from QuillBot revealed that searches for the misspelling “Noa” reached 144,000 monthly searches—essentially missing the silent ‘H’.

2. Muhammad

Most Common Misspelling: “Mohamed” -Changing both "U" to "O" and "A" to "E", as well as missing the third “M” 114,000 Monthly Searches

Despite being one of the most popular baby names of the year in the UK, Muhammad is a name that is commonly misspelt. With many swapping out “O’s” and “A’s” or missing the "M's."

While the name Muhammad can be spelt lots of different ways, the preferred English spelling is known as “Muhammad”, meaning the most common misspelling was revealed to be "Mohamed." Changing both "U" to "O" and "A" to "E," as well as missing the third "M," with 114,000 monthly searches. Again, a misspelling that may be understandable due to how it sounds phonetically.

3. George

Most Common Misspelling: “Gorge"—missing out the first “E” — 94,000 Monthly Searches

George was another name that made the list of most popular boy names in England, but it’s a name a lot of us still can’t get right when it comes to spelling.

In fact, with 94,000 monthly searches, people misspelt the popular name “Gorge” instead of “George” the most, omitting the first "E.”.

4. Oliver

Most Common Misspelling: “Olivier"—Adding an extra “I”— 62,000 Monthly Searches

Sounding very similar to Olivia, Oliver was also among the most popular baby names for the last year in the UK.

However, perhaps because it sounds so similar to the girl's version of the name, many people often misspell Oliver as "Olivier,” adding an extra "I," with 62,000 monthly searches globally.

5. Leo

Most Common Misspelling: “Leao"—Adding an extra “A”— 321,000 Monthly Searches

Rounding off the UK’s top 10 most popular baby names was Leo. Again, while you think it is a pretty simple name to spell, it still trips many people up.

In fact, with 321,000 monthly searches for "Leao,” instead, it seems many people make the mistake of adding an extra “A” to the name.

Methodology

To find the most common misspellings of baby names, we took a seed list of the top 10 most popular girls and boys names in England via Nameberry.

When we had our seed list, we then took each name and manually researched common ways each was misspelt. Finally, we took each common misspelling and found the Google search volume globally per month via Ahrefs. The misspellings with the most number of searches were determined to be the most common for each name.
