With only 10% of the federal budget going toward kids, the non-profit organization SmileHub recently released new reports on the Best Charities for Children and the States Providing the Most Support for Children in 2024.
In order to highlight the states providing the most support for children and the ones that need to improve the most, SmileHub compared each of the 50 states based on 27 key metrics. The data set ranges from the quality of public hospitals to the child well-being index ranking to spending per child enrolled in preschool.

Key Stats
- New Jersey has the lowest share of maltreated children – 10.4 times lower than in Massachusetts, which has the highest share.
- California has the most children’s charities per capita – 12.6 times more than in Rhode Island, which has the fewest charities.
- Minnesota has the highest share of nationally accredited child care centers – 60.4 times more than in Arkansas, which has the lowest share.
