Parenting Pointers - Teens and Identity Challenges

Today’s teens face a maze of identity challenges amidst a sea of distractions and illusions, intensified by the pervasive influence of social media & the evolving impact of AI technologies. Navigating these pressures requires a clear path to self-awareness and purpose.

According to Hollywood screenwriter Prema Rose, addressing these critical issues is essential for guiding young people through their formative years. Prema has dedicated her career to guiding young people through these challenges using storytelling. She has a unique perspective on overcoming identity struggles & fostering resilience.

“Teens are overwhelmed by conflicting messages about their identity and aspirations,” says Prema. “Supporting them in their quest for clarity and purpose is crucial in a world filled with misleading signals and superficial values.”

With a distinguished career in the performing arts, and a deep spiritual journey, Rose offers a unique perspective on these challenges. Her animated/live-action musical The MicroCosmic Cartoon Show tackles these very issues, providing a narrative that helps young audiences explore self-discovery and resilience.

Prema is on a mission to provide parents and teens with practical advice and support, fostering meaningful conversations and positive outcomes for young people.

I had a chance to learn more in this interview.

1…..What’s the best way parents and caregivers can help teens explore self identity?

Ask questions of their children that allow them to explore their feelings about different subjects. For instance, “What is it like for you when you meet new people?”, “Do you become excited or nervous if you are starting a new subject?”, “How do you feel if a good friend moves away?”.

These sorts of questions encourage them to go deeper inside themselves to discover how they tick.

2…..How can creative media like “The MicroCosmic Cartoon Show”help build self-expression and resilience?

Usually there is some sort of challenge, or several, within the narrative of the movie. The Hero/ Heroine has to find a solution to a deep seated issue within themselves to find what they are truly looking for. He/She learns to be creative as they navigate the pitfalls of their discovery. How does the path reveal itself before them? In whom do they place their trust? Do they have any wise guides to lead them down a perilous path?

The adventure becomes personal to the audience and the lessons will embolden the viewer on his/her own personal journey through The Circus of Life.

3…..How can educators and caregivers help counteract some of the messages teens receive on social media?

So much of social media is about living up to so called norms of other people and how they are being promoted. Does it sell to be self assured in your bodily image? If one is feeling “less than” what will I do to make myself more like my ideal image of myself. Thus advertising becomes essential to sell the so-called perfect version of myself.

There are numerous avenues (rabbit holes) to get caught up in.

The trick is to step outside the myriad of false persuasions to be able to see and acknowledge the intrinsic worth of our youth. As caregivers we have a responsibility to uplift the very best, smartest, talented, and most self assured elements of the young evolving person.

How do we model the character and ideals that we want our kids to emulate? Are we able to stay emotionally stable, even in the midst of difficult situations?

We are all in this School of Life and we all make mistakes by not living up to our ideal. We must be realistic and encourage our children to live the life of their dreams.
