Knights Unite, by Laurel Colless, is the third standalone novel in the Peter Blue Series, where young heroes at a school for top ecodemics confront the evils of overconsumption and environmental degradation as living forces.
Hidden in the mist on an island off the south coast of England, the school is run by the Global Advanced Intelligence Agency, or GAIA, an organisation that combines human acumen with nature’s own intelligence, to tackle big world problems. GAIA agents pit themselves against the Conclave, led by the CEO of Big Garbage and organised around the weaponizing of Anthrogs – demonic monsters born from garbage that manifest as wildfires, floods and killer storms.
Laurel Colless was inspired to create the Peter Blue series after pivoting from an environmental business career in the adult world (Mitsubishi in Japan, Nokia in Finland, and Virginia Tech in the US), where she witnessed the ongoing struggle to prioritise environmental concerns over short-term economic gains.
"Working with the upcoming generation – today’s 9 to 12-year-olds – brought a new clarity," Colless says. "They get the urgency of climate change, and they also believe in both science and the magic of nature."
The Peter Blue novels, with their big mythological backdrops and fast-paced plots, are designed to drive children’s literacy while making great springboards into STEM learning. “But above all, they’re here to entertain,” Colless says, “and that’s a promise I make to my readers!”
About the book
Knights Unite follows the story of Riva du Lac, who’s determined to keep her promise to her dad – no detentions in the first term at Spiral Hall. With just three days left, it seems like smooth sailing. But her plans capsize during a sea cleanup when she discovers Shem, a mythical fish-the rules or saving her new friend. Meanwhile, during a nap in assembly, Riva's classmate Peter Blue has a vision of a garbage-spewing sea beast attacking the knights. With floodwaters rising and time running out, Shem’s secret from the past may be the only hope for Peter, Riva and their friends to save the knights – and themselves.
