In today's ever-evolving job market, understanding which skills will attract the attention of recruiters across different industries is essential. With increasing competition and shifting employer expectations, tailoring your resume with the right skills has become a strategic advantage for candidates.
To shed light on this topic, Zety’s researchers analyzed over 93,000 resumes created on our platform to identify the most frequently highlighted skills by sector and job title. The findings of The Most Popular Resume Skills report provide valuable insights into key trends in the modern job market and how candidates are positioning themselves to succeed.
Here are the key findings from the analysis:
- Average Skills Listed: American resumes include an average of 9.65 skills, with the majority (41.39%) listing 6-10 skills, indicating a focus on showcasing a balanced yet comprehensive skill set.
- Top Skills in Demand:
- Soft Skills Dominate: Teamwork and collaboration, problem-solving, and time management top the list, demonstrating the importance of interpersonal and organizational abilities across many industries.
- Most Common Hard Skills: Data entry, computer proficiency, and expertise in Microsoft Office are among the leading hard skills.
- Industry-Specific Insights:
- Healthcare: Patient care and communication skills are highly valued, reflecting the need for professionals who can work effectively with patients, families and healthcare teams.

- Manufacturing: Technical expertise such as machine operation and attention to detail are vital, as well as problem-solving abilities to ensure production quality.
- Professional Services: Analytical thinking and project management skills are the most frequently mentioned, emphasizing the need for critical decision-making and leadership.
- Skills Count by Job Title
- Roles with Most Skills Listed: Senior roles like Directors and Managers average over 18 skills per resume, reflecting the broad expertise required at this level.
- Roles with Fewer Skills Listed: Engineers and Developers, averaging around 8 skills, focus on specialized, in-depth expertise.
The study also emphasizes the importance of tailoring resumes to specific job descriptions. While common skills provide a strong foundation, customization increases the likelihood of standing out to potential employers.
“When listing skills on your resume, it's important to focus on those that are directly relevant to the job you’re applying for instead of relying on the most common skills in general.” said Maciej Tomaszewicz, Certified Professional Resume Writer and career expert at Zety. “Tailoring your skills to the specific job description can greatly increase your chances of getting noticed by employers.”

The results of this study are based on the analysis of real professional resumes written by users of the Zety resume builder—people of different ages from different locations, industries, and career stages. The resumes were created by professionals holding more than 2,500 different job titles.
