Book Nook - Freedom Pancakes

Freedom Pancakes for Ukraine is the latest children’s book by award-winning author Dr. Janice Cohn and beautifully illustrated by Ukrainian artist Yana Holubiatnikova. This touching story highlights the power of kindness and compassion during the Ukraine war, showing how small actions—whether from volunteers on the frontlines or children across the world—can make a profound impact.

In this moving tale, young Artem, who flees Ukraine with his mother, finds comfort in the kindness of a World Central Kitchen volunteer in Poland. Meanwhile, Hannah, a girl in the U.S., is inspired to help from afar, proving that anyone can make a difference, even in times of crisis.

Dr. Cohn emphasizes the reciprocal benefits of helping others. “When children engage in acts of kindness and support, they not only contribute to their communities but also experience a profound sense of self-worth and purpose. It is a powerful reminder that helping others is also a way to help ourselves,” she explains.

I had a chance to see a copy of this book. It's a heartwarming story that not only helps raise awareness of children who have had to flee Ukraine, but also helps connect it with actions people around the world can take to make a difference.

What makes Freedom Pancakes for Ukraine even more special is that a portion of the book’s proceeds will be donated to the Ukraine Children’s Action Project (UCAP), an organization dedicated to supporting the educational and psychological needs of Ukrainian children affected by the war.

“The importance of fostering empathy and moral courage in children cannot be overstated,” Dr. Cohn says. “In a world where challenges and crises are increasingly prevalent, it is essential that we equip the next generation with the tools to respond with compassion and resilience. By teaching children to be ‘upstanders’ rather than bystanders, we prepare them to face adversity with strength and kindness.”
