Healthy Habits - Why More Moms are Turning to Bariatric Surgery

When I ask people why they chose bariatric surgery, the vast majority will say because of their kids, their number one reason and motivator to have surgery. Losing weight meant they could be able to play with their kids and live a long, healthy life for them. They’ve told me they are able to participate in every activity without their weight holding them back, their children seem to be happier, and their only regret is that they wish they had done it sooner.

More Mothers are Looking for a Long-Term Weight Loss Solution

Statistically speaking, maternal obesity rates have increased significantly over the last few years, posing a risk to both mothers and their children. This has led to more and more moms turning to bariatric surgery as a long-term weight loss solution. This decision, of course, doesn’t always come easy. Misconceptions about the surgery and the stigma of it being an ‘easy way out’, can make some mothers hesitant to consider it, even if it means they get to be a healthier and happier version of themselves for their children.

As more information regarding the safety and efficiency of the surgery arises, bariatric surgery is becoming increasingly popular, with many experts calling it a long-term solution for weight loss. More mothers are finally choosing to embrace the best version of themselves and are not allowing obesity to hold them back from enjoying motherhood. Bariatric surgery can be the solution they need to lose an immense amount of weight, especially if dieting, weight loss drugs, and other weight loss options have failed.

A High Success Rate

Bariatric surgery has a high success rate of about 90%, considering that weight loss surgery is considered successful if you lose 50% of your weight and keep it off. The success rate does vary depending on the type of bariatric procedure you get, such as a gastric bypass, gastric band, or sleeve gastrectomy. Many people experience steady weight loss for the first 18-24 months and can keep the weight off by adopting a healthy diet and lifestyle changes post-surgery.

The Benefits Outweigh the Cons

I lost over 200 pounds with bariatric surgery, and the improved health and quality of life I’ve experienced afterward definitely outweigh any challenges I’ve overcome. Although surgery can have risks and complications, the risks associated with obesity and its related diseases could be worse, especially long-term. Bariatric surgery not only offers a long-term weight loss solution to mothers, but it can also offer immense health benefits by reducing your risk of potentially life-threatening weight-related health problems like heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and type 2 diabetes.

Aside from the health benefits, the surgery also increases energy levels, self-confidence, and enhanced mobility. Many mothers I’ve spoken to also said that they are experiencing a better quality of life, including improved mental health, social interactions, and overall life satisfaction. This has helped them spend more time with their kids and enabled them to be a better version of themselves both mentally and physically.

Physically being able to do more with your children can help you create a stronger bond with your family. Plus, I believe bariatric surgery requires structure, discipline, and healthier habits, which sets a positive example for children.

Balancing Motherhood and Recovery

Balancing the demands of motherhood while recovering from bariatric surgery can be challenging, but it’s far from impossible. The key is to be patient with yourself and prioritize self-care as much as you do your children’s needs. Initially, you might need extra support from family and friends to manage daily tasks and childcare as your body heals.

There are going to be challenging days and that's when it's most important to remember why you have chosen this route, but I will guarantee you, that investing in your health is the best thing you could do for yourself and your family. My biggest piece of advice would be not to focus on the number on the scale but rather concentrate on being consistent and adopting healthier lifestyle choices, maintaining a balance so that it is something that you can sustain for a lifetime.

What to Know Before Surgery

It’s important to do plenty of research and be well-prepared if you are considering bariatric surgery. Understanding the procedure, potential risks, finances, and lifestyle changes required post-surgery is essential. I chose to have my surgery done through Elias Ortiz & Company in Mexico, a top destination for bariatric surgery, and an option that is usually more affordable than local surgeons in the United States or Canada. Make sure that you choose a surgical center with a good reputation for successful bariatric surgeries and one that will make you feel comfortable and well-informed about all the pre and post-op surgery requirements.

Final Thoughts

For any mother considering bariatric surgery, while the journey may come with its challenges, the reward of being able to fully engage in your children’s lives and living a healthier lifestyle is worth it. Bariatric surgery can be the solution you need to overcome obesity and its weight-related health issues that may have prevented you from fully enjoying motherhood.

That is why it’s not surprising that more mothers are turning to bariatric surgery, not only to prioritize their own health but also to set a positive example for their children and ensure they can create positive, lasting memories together.
