As winter continues to chill the nation, utility bills are skyrocketing as houses are heated and more appliances are used to keep Americans safe and warm. Unfortunately, this comes at the cost of higher bills, and Americans are drowning: a new report on utility budgeting by American Home Shield found that 54% are overwhelmed by monthly utility costs.
Over 1 in 3 are worried about affording their electric bills this winter:
- Americans say their electric bills went up an average of 11% in the last year (electric & internet top the list)
- Americans pay an average of $473 monthly across all utilities and $232 for just electricity
- 1 in 10 are skipping medical appointments to pay utilities; 1 in 4 are reducing their food spending
Less than 1 in 3 have a choice in electricity providers; 77% wish they had more choice, and 74% support a government-controlled electric grid to stabilize prices.
