Understanding where food comes from is a crucial step in developing children’s environmental awareness and healthy eating habits, but to kids, the journey from farm to plate can feel like a mystery. Our Food Grows by Sarah M. White is a beautifully illustrated children’s book releasing April 2025, that fills this gap by introducing young readers to the origins of their favorite foods, from strawberries and tomatoes to asparagus and corn, and inspiring an early connection with the natural world.
Through vibrant collage-style artwork by Tessa Gibbs and engaging, simple explanations, Our Food Grows walks young readers through the fascinating process of how fruits, vegetables, and grains grow from the earth to eventually become part of their meals. Perfect for curious kids and budding gardeners alike, this book is designed to spark a love for nature, the environment, and healthy eating.
“When browsing the produce section,” Sarah explains, “it’s easy to forget the reason we have all these delicious foods—they grew from plants in myriad different ways. We wanted to help children make that connection for the first time and tap into their sense of wonder.”
