Book Nook - The Super Upside Factor

In his book The Super Upside Factor , Daniel Kang explains:

  • Like outsized returns, extraordinary careers are made through 100x inflection points, rather than through linear improvements.

  • Frameworks used by venture capitalists to consistently identify asymmetric bets and create outsized returns can be applied to life decisions.

In The Super Upside Factor, Daniel Kang draws on his experience as a venture capitalist at Softbank Vision Fund and a Y Combinator-backed founder to adapt asymmetric principles for personal and professional life. He offers a clear framework for maximizing luck and generating outsized returns―what he calls Super Upsides. Through vivid, real-life experiments, Kang demonstrates how he put these principles into practice―from securing a book deal writing just 15 minutes a day; to recovering from a spiraling plane as a pilot; to raising millions by betting on a pivotal career shift.

Backed by decision science research and personal experimentations, the book strikes a balance between theory and practical advice, guiding readers to identify and optimize skewed life bets. Beyond the tactical elements, Kang explores the human side of applying these principles, including discussions on mental health, emotional struggles, and even tactically quitting.

The Super Upside Factor will inspire readers―even the most risk averse―to realize they are only a few Super Upsides away from extraordinary success and provide precise asymmetric principles needed to stack the odds in their favor.

Daniel Kang is the CEO & co-founder of Y-Combinator backed startup Flowbo, a marketplace that provides financing to influencers and allows fans to share in their success. Prior to his startup, he was a venture capitalist at Softbank Vision Fund in both Silicon Valley and London, UK, where he deployed $500 million and raised $600 million for portfolio companies. During his tenure, he served formally as a Board Observer to Auto1 Group in Berlin alongside Gerhard Cromme, former board of Volkswagen and Lufthansa; and Gerd A. Häusler, former Vice Chairman of Lazard and Chairman of Commerzbank. Previously, he was a consultant at Oliver Wyman and received pilot training sponsored by the Department of National Defence of Canada.

Growing up in a low-income, immigrant family in rural parts of Canada, Daniel made asymmetric bets that elevated him out of poverty, from 120 scholarships to fund his education to raising millions for his startup in his dorm room at Oxford.

Daniel is the author of The Super Upside Factor, published with Wiley & Sons. He's a writer and speaker invited to share his thoughts at organizations including:

  • Academic: University of Oxford, McGill University, Seoul National University,  TEDxStanford
