Parenting Pointers - Best and Worst States for Single Parents

With 9.8 million single parents in the U.S., many of them women, financial instability is a significant challenge as they earn lower average incomes and face more economic hardship than two-parent households.

With National Single Parents Day on March 21st, new research ranks all 50 states and D.C. on key factors like education, worker protections, and income to show which states are most supportive of single-parent families.

Here’s a look at our key findings:

- Most states earned failing grades. Nearly half of U.S. states received failing grades in our analysis and only 12 states earned grades of A or B.

- New Jersey is the highest-ranked state for single parenting; West Virginia ranked lowest.

- Education quality is a decisive factor for single parents. Education was the most important factor among single parents. Massachusetts and New Jersey scored exceptionally well due to high math and reading proficiency.

 - High living costs challenge many families, even in states with higher median incomes. Missouri and Alaska are the most affordable for single-parent families due to lower costs of goods and childcare relative to median income, while Minnesota and Utah score well partly due to their lower cost of living.
